Austin and I met the modern traditional way via.. the internet. Facebook to be exact, but nothing exotically special other than Austin friend requesting me and messaging me, “do I know you?” I thought for a moment maybe he would “slide into my DMs” and use a corny pick up line or pay me a compliment, but Austin’s ego is much too big for that! (Lol). But before I dive into our not so exhilarating conversation that led to our first date, let me give you our background that I believe fate had something to do with. Now Austin is 3 years older than me, so we missed each-other on most things. This dates back to the same elementary school, which we both attended as kids, before he moved to Smith Valley. We attended Gardnerville Elementary School, Austin and his brothers attended within a few years of me starting, but if we were there at the same time we never knew it. Then high school rodeo. Which of course we both did, Austin way more active than myself, but once again never crossed paths. This continues to college, where we both attended Feather River College. Now my first year I didn’t college rodeo, which was ironically the same time Austin was captain of the team. The next year, I joined, and Austin slipped away to attend school in Vegas. Now I know you’re probably thinking this happens all the time, but it KEPT happening, and all the whole we never crossed paths. Once again the phenomenon continues when we both moved to Elko, although for completely different reasons.. I moved to follow a boyfriend and he moved up there to work. We attended the same rodeos, ropings, parties, and bars, and once again never saw each other. Not that it would’ve made a difference, we were both in relationships, and were on completely different paths. I had a daughter, and Austin was doing what Austin does, roping and training horses. Now I bet you’re wondering okay when do these people finally get together? Well, let the plot thicken! Austin moved back to Smith Valley in 2016, where he moved back to help his dad with his cattle and be back around family. I believe Austin moved back around February, and I left my relationship and my daughter and I moved back to Gardnerville, (30 minutes from Smith Valley) in January of 2016. Now here is where Facebook finally ties in. Austin friend requested me, thinking I was “pretty hot” according to him in February of 2016. We had finally crossed paths. We had a spicy conversation about the weather, the fact that we knew each other looked familiar, but couldn’t place it, and retraced our backgrounds with so much in common. We talked about rodeo, feather river, and even living in Elko at the same time. With that being said Austin asked me out to dinner at a local Mexican restaurant, and we talked for hours. I kissed him as we left, and we lived happily ever after.
I could go on and on about our relationship, but I will sum up everything I can before engagement! About 3 years later (2019) I was getting pretty itchy about being proposed to. And of course dropping hints. But a huge rock hit our path when my dad got really sick in June of 2019. Now I know the real story, but Austin was planning on proposing July of 2019, but with my dad being sick it was just not the right time. As time went on, Austin realized he better do it sooner than later. So August 19, 2019, he asked me to go look for cows in the sweet water mountains. He saddled you my colt, that he bought be as a yearling for my birthday in 2017. As we are riding through the aspen trees, I am seriously looking for cattle. A little creek ran beside us, and the leaves on the trees were turning shades of yellow. We had been riding for about an hour, and he got off and told me to air my saddle out. Puzzled, because we had only been riding an hour and not in any hills or even in direct sunlight, I was like whatever this guy knows what he’s doing I guess, so I get off and air my saddle out. I cinch back up and he tells me to check the other cinch. The one you never really check on the right side, I was like “what?! Why do I have to check it?!” He replied “just do it” so I went to the other side, sure enough the cinch was fine, and he said “look at that tree!” I was like “what tree?!” I’m not kidding you this tree was 12 inches in front of my face and I was looking everywhere. Once I spotted it, there was a carving that read “marry me?” I completely lost it, I mean full tears screaming yes throwing myself into his arms. He could barely put the ring on I was shaking so bad lol. Fast forward, we set a date to June 20, 2020. It was amazing to plan my dream wedding, we had so many hurdles to jump over through the entire planning process. I lost my dad in December of 2019, and my mom was diagnosed with cancer January 2020. Also Covid. But we stuck through, and said if only 4 people show up to our wedding then who cares, we just wanted to be married. My mom was able to walk me down the isle, because my dad couldn’t be there and she was met with his urn in the front row. It was so emotional, but so special. I played my dad & i’s song, and asked my future father in law to dance with me. Halfway through, not a dry eye in the whole 250 people who attended, my 6 year old daughter joined us dancing. My mom passed in august after the wedding.
Now our story isn’t traditional, it is out of order and quite humorous, but it is ours. I am so happy to have found someone who shares the same viewings in life, and is old school in the traditional family way. We have welcomed our first child together, and named her after both our dads, her name is Tommi Ray.
