There are few people in the world, perhaps no one else at all even, who can say that one of their first dances as a married couple was on a dance floor shared with two horses under a sea of festoon lights while 180 family & friends watched on… More about that soon.
Trent & Vanessa met on Christmas Day in 2017 when Vanessa was visiting her sister & fiancé, Cody, at ‘Forest Home’ in Central Queensland. Trent’s brother was married to Cody’s sister (if you can wrap your head around that without me confusing you too much) and so, ‘Forest Home’ was the place to be that year for both families it seems. When Trent walked in & locked eyes with Vanessa, there was an instant connection, a spark was lit & it was clear for all to see that something special was in the foundations. Within just 10 days, they were officially dating and it did not take long at all for Vanessa to give up her life in town & move out to ‘Marathon Downs,’ where all the qualities she had only ever dreamed of finding in a man, were suddenly within reach. Trent, an avid horseman & keen campdrafter, knew that she was here to stay when she wandered into the Hitchley & Harrow truck one day at a campdraft & walked out not too long later, with multiple bags full of shirts & jeans, a receipt for well over $1100 and a smile that told him she was ready for the next draft! On the 5th of January, 2020, Trent asked the raven haired beauty to become his wife and by August of 2020, they had welcomed twins, Saxby & Vienna into the world, darling little siblings for big sister, Lakota. And finally on Easter Saturday, Vanessa became Mrs Challacombe.
Now, to finish off what I started with… Trent & Vanessa told me that they loved unique photographs, the way I often think outside of the box and while they definitely wanted all of the candid memories, they also were up for a little adventure and their only request was to have their beloved horses, Sonita and Moore Heartache in some shots. As the afternoon rolled around, so did the heavy clouds; thankfully they held off for the ceremony and those three gorgeous peaks framed the vows perfectly however the rain decided to fall just as we started our portraits in the sorghum paddock. We were running out of light & time (literally a recurring nightmare for me) and I kept thinking, how am I going to get these unique photos with the horses when my light is all gone. Lightbulb moment, when I remembered the gorgeous dance floor under lights back at the reception. A reception area that was also sheltering the guests who were seated, ready to greet the newlyweds. I ran my idea past Trent & Vanessa, saying, if it doesn’t work, well it doesn’t work, but knowing how many finals under lights these two horses would have seen, I had a feeling they would entertain my wild ideas and how right I was. It was truly a once in a lifetime feeling, as friends & family watched on with loving smiles, I could hear the quiet ooh’s & ahh’s as Sonita & Moore Heartache stood on the dance floor as though attending weddings was a normal Saturday night.
