“Our story began in late 2017, Jesse lived in Lockhart TX, and I was living in Las Cruces NM at the time. We knew one another through mutual friends and he and my oldest brother worked for the same company. I mentioned him to my mom, but I thought it probably wouldn’t work out. Mom said, “he sounds like a good guy,” and encouraged me to give him a chance!
A few weeks later I was spending Thanksgiving at my parents’ place in far west Texas, basically the middle of nowhere, when Jesse called on his way to Las Vegas. He was going to jackpot in Arizona and said he would be coming through Las Cruces the day after Thanksgiving and asked if I would like to have dinner with him.
I mentioned to my mom and sister in-laws that he had asked me out to dinner, but really hadn’t made up my mind if I was going to meet him. The afternoon of the dinner date my dad, brothers and I were all roping in the arena, and I was still on the fence about heading back to Las Cruces which was a little over two hours away. My mom asked about my date, and I kept making excuses – honestly, I wanted to back out!! She told me to take a chance, so I finally hauled butt to back to Las Cruces.
Jesse got into town 30 minutes before I did and texted me for my address, but I didn’t send it to him until an hour later. I don’t know if it was nerves or what, but when I got to my apartment, I was more concerned about washing my dirty dishes than changing into a cute outfit that didn’t smell like roping steers. When I finally got my dishes done, I texted him my address. He had been waiting at the gas station a half a mile from my house for almost an hour.
I’m sure I reeked of manure and sweaty saddle pads but darn it those dirty dishes were spotless! The doorbell rang and when I peeped through the door, I saw the cutest cowboy in a Canadian tuxedo (denim shirt and denim jeans) – he looked so handsome! I hopped in his truck, and we went to a little place I loved at the time. It was kind of an artistic place – not fit for a cowboy! You could tell Jesse was not used to anything like that! I can still picture the look on his face when they brought out the bread, honestly it looked Play-Doh. He was a trooper and tried to eat it with a smile.
Long story short, Mom was right and I’m so glad that Jesse gave me a chance too!!! We kept in touch after the dinner date and fell in love roping, hunting, dancing and laughing together. Jesse popped the question in December 2020. We are looking forward to celebrating our wedding with family and friends in November.”
